A couple of weeks ago, I was speaking with an HR user who was frustrated that she could not get reliable insights from the HR data she was feeding into ChatGPT. To be clear, she was using her company's private GPT environment, not her public account. Her process sounded simple enough: export data from her HR system into a spreadsheet, upload it, and ask questions. But the results were inconsistent and often wrong.
The issue was not with her questions. The real problem was that she was loading raw data into a large language model and hoping it would understand the structure, relationships, and business meaning buried inside those spreadsheets. It did not.
Generative AI has changed how people think about information. Ask it a question and it responds instantly with a confident, fluent answer. That works well for general knowledge, but it becomes risky when applied to enterprise data. Without knowing your data model, business rules, or security context, the AI is essentially guessing. At scale, those guesses can lead to wrong conclusions, loss of trust, and poor decisions.
When you connect Oracle E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, or Fusion Cloud to a general-purpose AI tool, the model has no idea what it is looking at. It cannot interpret your flex fields, security configurations, or custom workflows. Without that understanding, it will almost certainly misread the data and deliver misleading conclusions.
Most organisations run several systems side by side. Your ERP handles finance, your CRM manages customers, your warehouse system tracks inventory, and your service platform monitors support cases. The real insight often lies in connecting those dots. A basic GenAI tool cannot do that reliably.
Large language models are not designed to handle Extract, Transform, and Load processes. They cannot consistently filter data, manage fiscal calendars, or work with ragged hierarchies. Small changes in your prompt can lead to very different results, which is not acceptable for business reporting.
When you use an open-ended prompt with a GenAI engine, the same question can produce different answers every time. Internal randomness, model updates, and contextual variations all affect the result. That makes it impossible to build consistent reporting or trust the output for financial or operational decisions.
Time is one of the hardest dimensions to manage in business analytics. Month-to-date calculations, rolling 13-week trends, fiscal year offsets, and budget-versus-actual comparisons all require precise handling of dates and periods. Large language models do not understand this automatically.
Security is one of the biggest risks of using GenAI directly with enterprise data. When you copy or expose data to a LLM model, you often bypass the access controls and row-level permissions that protect sensitive information.
A general GenAI model can give you an answer, but it rarely shows how it got there. Without seeing the filters, joins, or logic behind the response, you cannot know whether it is accurate or repeatable.
Even the largest GenAI models have context limits. They can only process a certain amount of data in each interaction, which means they cannot efficiently handle millions of records or large transactional histories.
Hallucination occurs when an AI confidently delivers an answer that is completely wrong. It happens because large language models rely on probabilistic pattern-matching, not factual grounding. When they lack enough data or context, they invent an answer to fill the gap. Playbooks operating on governed, verified models keep every insight connected to trusted data sources.
Business reporting is not a one-time activity. Teams need recurring reports, daily digests, delta checks, and alerts. A simple GenAI chat does not know when to refresh or what has changed since yesterday. It reacts to prompts but cannot operate as part of your daily workflow.
Dumping data into a GenAI engine can be a fun experiment, but it is not a sustainable strategy for enterprise analytics. The moment you need consistency, governance, or scale, the approach begins to break down.
By combining AI with Application Intelligence, you bring structure and understanding to your data. Instead of treating AI as a black box, you give it a clear map of your business systems and processes.
