How a Pint of the Black Stuff Got Me Thinking About AI and Data

A conversation in Dublin sparked a reflection on the broken promise of BI and the AI-powered future of data access.

How a Pint of the Black Stuff Got Me Thinking About AI and Data

I have been fortunate in my career to work at the center of the business intelligence industry. For years I have witnessed firsthand the value that BI can deliver to organizations, particularly those using Oracle JD Edwards. I have worked directly with more than 200 JD Edwards customers over the years, gaining a front-row perspective of both progress and challenges.

Recently, over a pint in Dublin, a friend posed a straightforward but meaningful question: "How do you think AI will change how people work with data?"

Before responding, I reflected on how far we have come and what still impedes companies.

The original promise of BI

When business intelligence tools emerged, they promised something compelling: democratizing data access and enabling anyone in an organization to make better decisions. However, reality proved more nuanced.

In most organizations, information conveyed power. Those who mastered tools, manipulated data in Excel, and created reports often advanced professionally. Their reputations depended not only on knowledge but on their capability to uncover insights others could not readily access.

This dynamic produced organizational winners and losers. Because BI platforms were costly, companies adopted siloed approaches. Consequently, only a select few gained access to tools and training, while others remained uninformed. The aspiration of "data democracy" materialized only for the privileged few, not the many.

Meanwhile, companies squandered resources preserving specialized knowledge within individuals rather than dispersing it across the organization. When those individuals departed or changed positions, that knowledge disappeared with them.

Why AI changes everything

This is why I consider artificial intelligence such a pivotal transformation. AI can disrupt this dynamic and ultimately place information into everyone's hands who requires it.

Until recently, extracting answers from data demanded technical expertise, time, and resources. Many business users depended substantially on IT teams or data analysts to prepare, cleanse, and explain information before acting.

AI reverses this approach. With AI, organizations can transition from data preparation to immediate interaction. AI assistants, such as the one we have created at eyko, enable users to pose natural-language queries about their business and obtain clear, actionable responses instantaneously. No SQL expertise needed, no clunky dashboard navigation, no report delays.

This represents significant potential. AI can ultimately fulfill the pledge that BI tools never quite managed. Data can transform into an active resource everyone utilizes daily, not merely the chosen minority.

What this means for business

When information access becomes genuinely universal throughout an organization, priorities shift naturally. Organizations no longer must invest extensive time and effort simply distributing and preparing data. Instead, they can concentrate on what truly matters: execution and strategy.

Decision-making accelerates, gains confidence, and increases transparency. Personnel closest to operations can obtain required insights without consulting specialists or expecting reports. Executives can observe real-time conditions and modify strategy immediately.

This is where AI-powered platforms like eyko become valuable.

How eyko helps

At eyko, we have developed two essential capabilities embodying this perspective.

The first is eyko Assist. This represents our conversational AI interface permitting anyone to pose questions and get instant answers from current business data. Whether finance examines margins, operations monitors supply chain performance, or sales evaluates pipeline forecasts, eyko Assist supplies real-time insights consistently.

The second is eyko AI Playbooks. Playbooks constitute AI-generated business summaries that fundamentally transform how teams examine and analyze their data. They function across platforms, uncovering cause-and-effect connections that segregated tools cannot recognize. Playbooks transition users from straightforward questions to comprehensive narratives regarding business conditions and causes. They display the comprehensive context, revealing hidden interdependencies and insights.

Collectively, these capabilities permit organizations to abandon obsolete reporting workflows. Eliminated are information gatekeepers, departmental barriers, and delays awaiting data currency.

The road ahead

Naturally, we remain in nascent transformation stages. Numerous organizations persist using traditional BI platforms, static reports, and Excel substitutes. However, rapid change approaches. AI improves and democratizes daily, and early-adopting businesses will possess significant competitive benefits.

AI represents far more than traditional reporting layers. It constitutes an entirely different approach to data engagement. An approach where required information stays perpetually accessible, analysis operates instantaneously, and teams possess authorization to act immediately.

As I concluded my drink and conversation with my friend, that embodied my central message: the emerging data landscape involves every business participant accessing necessary information when required, free from impediments, delays, or information gatekeeping.

That represents a future we anticipate developing at eyko.
